Tonga hotels offers the best value boutique beach resorts in the South Pacific. Tourism isn't nearly as developped here as in Fiji, Cook Islands or Tonga, but the handful or so beach resorts on small islands offer genuine hospitality and some of the best sightseeing opportunites around. The main island in Tonga is Tongatapu. This large but almost flat coral island has several interesting sights including some fascinating blowholes and the archaeolgical remains of Tonga's historical kingdom that stretched far and wide throughout the South Pacific. Hotels on Tongatapu is centred around the main town of Nukualofa, as well as on tiny coral islands that lie in the lagoon offshore. Snorkelling in the lagoon and day cruises to uninhabited motu are popular from both Nukualofa or the island resorts. Haapai comprises of small coral islands with small traditional fishing villages. Vavau is a myriad of limestone islands and coral atolls with deep waterways and secluded bays. This region has exceptional sailing, game fishing and snorkelling, gorgeous beaches and is the main centre in the South Pacific for viewing humpback whales which visit in numbers between May and October.
